Sight Word (Vocabulary) Study Ideas

Sight Word (Vocabulary)Study Ideas

Below you will find sight word game ideas for your child.  I am also creating links to our sight word lists.  The Kindergarten list is intended to be mastered in kindergarten.  We also review these words the first couple weeks of first grade. List A is intended to be mastered by, or before, Winter Break.  List B is intended to be mastered by, or before, the end of your child's first grade year.  List C is provided for those children who have mastered list A and B. Click on the list name to view the list.

~ Swatter ~ Children lay out vocabulary words.  Call one out, and the child swats it with a fly swatter.  The child can also use their hand.  The game could be called "Bam!" (or a different clever name).

~ Charades ~ Some words can be acted out.  Show the word to your child.  You don't look at it.  The child reads it silently and then acts it out for you to guess.  You can reverse the game, too.

~ Buzz! ~ Hide movement cards in your stack.  We hide "Buzz!" in class.  The children read the words as they come up.  When "Buzz!" comes up, the children get up and act like a bee. You can do other words like hop, skip, an animal name or sound, crawl, etc. Brainstorm ideas with your child for more motivation.

~ Hopscotch ~ Draw a hopscotch path.  Write your child's site words in the squares.  When your child hops along the path, or throws a rock in a certain square, he/she reads the word(s).

~ Computer or iPad Games ~ Starfall.com, SpellingCity.com, abcya.com, Sight Words by Photo Touch (app), Cimo Sight (app), Sight Words (app (has a picture of gears), and more!

~ Memory ~ For this game, you will need two cards of each word.  Turn the cards face down.  Turn over the cards (two at a time) to try to find matches.  Each time you turn a card over, read it. The player with the most matches at the end wins!

I'll add more ideas as I see them.  If you have any ideas, please let us know in the comments!
